“I avoid visibility because I am afraid of being judged.”

The workplace example used throughout this guide is synthetic.

The sentence may be insightful. It may also be incomplete. Perhaps one kind of visibility happens in a hostile setting. Perhaps the task is vague, the stakes are unusually high, or you lack practice. Perhaps you are protecting time from work you do not want. Fear of judgment may be part of the pattern without explaining all of it.

A possible explanation gets sticky when it turns into a circular identity: “I did this because I am this kind of person, and I know I am this kind of person because I keep doing this.” Now each example confirms the label and each exception looks irrelevant. The explanation no longer has to learn from what happens.

A working hypothesis makes a smaller promise. It is a provisional account that makes a prediction, competes with alternatives, and can change when the evidence changes. Its job is to improve the next question.

This guide borrows explicit predictions, rival explanations, and counter-evidence from scientific reasoning. Everyday life is not a controlled laboratory. A personal test has weak controls, noisy measurements, ethical limits, and a sample of one. Treat the result as local information, not a discovery about human nature.

Start with a pattern, not a personality verdict

Compare these two statements:

  • “I am an avoidant person.”
  • “In meetings where I have not prepared a point in writing, I stay silent even when I disagree.”

The first statement sounds stable and applies almost everywhere. That makes it hard to test. The second names a context and an observable response. It leaves room for several explanations, including anticipated judgment, lack of preparation, a power difference, uncertainty about the evidence, a meeting format that rewards interruption, or a deliberate choice not to spend political capital.

Use this form:

In [defined situation], I tend to [observable response], especially when [condition].

Avoid “always,” “never,” “deep down,” and causes you cannot observe directly. Specificity gives you something you can inspect without asking a short exercise to settle your personality.

Write one leading explanation and two rivals

A hypothesis needs to explain more than the behaviour itself. “I stay silent because I do not speak” changes the wording but adds no mechanism. A more useful version is: “I stay silent because I predict that visible disagreement will damage how competent I seem.”

Now write alternatives that would lead to different tests:

  1. I stay silent because I have not decided what I think before the discussion moves on.
  2. I stay silent because the chair does not create entry points and I choose not to interrupt.
  3. I stay silent because disagreement has previously been punished in this team.

Rivals are not forced optimism. The third explanation may be more serious than the leading one. Keeping it visible stops a vivid psychological story from absorbing every fact.

In Wason's 1960 conceptual task, participants often proposed examples consistent with their candidate rule instead of trying cases that might eliminate it.1 This small laboratory task does not show how a reader reasons about themself. It supplies only a design caution: a test that can never count against an explanation cannot discriminate among explanations.

Turn the explanation into a prediction

Write what you expect to observe if the leading hypothesis is doing meaningful work.

Leading hypothesis: “I stay silent mainly because I predict that disagreement will make me appear incompetent.”

Prediction: “If I prepare the point but still expect visible evaluation, I will delay or avoid speaking. If I can submit the same point privately, I will share it more readily.”

Rival hypothesis: “The main variable is preparation, not evaluation.”

Rival prediction: “When I prepare one sentence and one supporting fact, I will speak more often regardless of who is present.”

A prediction should identify a difference you could notice. “I will feel more aligned” may matter, but it is too elastic on its own. Add a behaviour, time, or context.

Decide in advance what would count against your preferred story

Complete this sentence before you test:

I would reduce confidence in this explanation if...

For the meeting example, that might mean you speak in high-evaluation settings whenever you prepare one sentence. It might mean you remain silent in low-evaluation settings, the behaviour varies more by chair than by audience status, or the pattern appears only in one team.

In Lord, Ross and Lepper's 1979 capital-punishment experiment, participants with opposing prior views rated the same mixed evidence differently.2 That result is context-specific. Here it supports only defining counter-evidence before interpreting a result. Writing it down does not eliminate bias, but it makes your reasoning easier to inspect.

Choose a small, ethical test that can teach you

A useful personal test changes one variable where possible, stays inside your authority, avoids unnecessary danger or irreversible cost, and has a date when you will stop and review. Several ordinary opportunities usually teach more than one dramatic moment.

For the synthetic meeting pattern, three tests target different explanations:

Test A: preparation

Before four recurring meetings, write one sentence you want to contribute and one fact that supports it. Record whether an entry point appears and whether you use it.

Test B: channel

Where normal and permitted, compare offering a point live with submitting it through an existing written channel. Record whether the difference concerns willingness, timing, response, or quality.

Test C: meeting structure

Ask the chair privately and without accusation how they prefer concerns to be raised. You can also observe whether participation changes with different chairs. Do not test a power or retaliation risk alone.

Each test has confounds. Preparation may also increase confidence. A written channel changes timing as well as visibility. Different meetings cover different topics. Naming those limits is more useful than pretending they have disappeared.

Do not make another person your experiment

“I will withdraw and see if they chase me” is not a clean test of whether someone cares. It changes the relationship, withholds relevant information, and allows many interpretations. Provoking a manager to test whether they are controlling creates unnecessary risk and may harm others.

Prefer ordinary, transparent actions. Make a clear request, ask a direct question, state an appropriate boundary, change your own routine, review records you are entitled to use, seek feedback openly and with consent, or observe variation that occurs naturally. Consent and safety matter more than experimental neatness.

Record data without pretending it is objective

After each opportunity, note the situation and date, what happened before the response, what you predicted, what you did, what happened next, and any feeling or body signal in plain language. Then record what supports the leading explanation, what supports an alternative, and what information is still missing.

The record remains self-report. Memory, attention, incentives, and mood shape it. Nisbett and Wilson's 1977 review argued against treating plausible verbal explanations as direct access to higher-order causes.3 The narrower boundary used here is that an experience report and a causal account are different claims.

Use external evidence where it is proportionate, such as your calendar, an actual message, submitted work, agreed scope, or open feedback from someone who saw the event. Do not record people covertly or break confidentiality to make the exercise feel scientific.

Review the design, not your worth

After the number of opportunities you chose, sort the result into one of four updates.

More confidence

The predicted pattern appeared in several relevant situations and the rivals fit less well. Write: “This hypothesis currently explains part of the pattern in these contexts.” Do not turn it into “This is who I am.”

Less confidence

Counter-evidence appeared, or an alternative predicted the variation better. The test still taught you something: the first explanation now deserves less confidence.

Narrower

The hypothesis fits in some conditions but not others. A more useful update may be: “Anticipated judgment matters when I am unprepared and the meeting includes more senior colleagues.”

Inconclusive

The cue did not occur, the test changed several variables, the record was incomplete, or the risk prevented a fair attempt. Do not call an inconclusive result confirmed. Redesign the test or stop.

Separate learning from action planning

Once the hypothesis is narrower, choose a proportionate response. If preparation matters: “If the agenda arrives, then I will write one point and one supporting fact before the meeting.” If structure matters: “I will ask the chair for a defined route to submit concerns.”

A 2006 meta-analysis of 94 independent tests found positive effects of implementation intentions on goal attainment across the included studies.4 This page borrows only the cue-response planning structure. It does not establish that this worksheet works for a particular reader or make an unsafe action safe.

If credible retaliation or another serious risk matters, do not turn the situation into a bravery test. Pause the self-test and seek relevant organisational, union, safeguarding, employment, or legal advice.

Three ways a personal hypothesis can go wrong

It cannot lose

“If I speak, I am overcompensating. If I stay silent, I am avoidant.” Every result confirms the theory. Repair it by naming an observation that would genuinely reduce confidence.

It claims a hidden cause

“I missed the deadline because childhood praise made me fear imperfection.” That may be one story. The immediate evidence might instead show unclear scope, conflicting deadlines, missing skill, fatigue, or repeated checking. Keep developmental explanations tentative. Do not try to recover or establish memories through a worksheet.

It becomes moral

“A brave person would do the test.” A result can be useful without becoming a character grade. Choosing not to run a test may be sensible when safety, privacy, power, contractual duties, or other obligations outweigh the information it could produce.

The seven-line personal hypothesis

Then add one protective question: What should remain outside this test? Use it to mark privacy, consent, safety, authority, and contractual boundaries before you begin.

Limits of the exercise

  • Everyday personal tests are uncontrolled, noisy, and cannot be generalised.
  • The cited reasoning studies do not establish that the same biases occurred in your situation.
  • Self-report can describe experience without establishing its cause.
  • A pattern may vary with setting, person, power, capacity, incentive, skill, health, or timing.
  • A handful of opportunities should update confidence, not define identity.
  • Ethical, safety, privacy, contractual, and relational constraints override the desire for a cleaner test.
